I found myself vaguely watching parts of the Hurley Pro Trestles. I say I watched it, what I mean was that it was on in the background while I was attempting multi tasking, as males need to. The forecast was not that exciting and the reality turned out to be less so as far as swell and consistency were concerned. I am confident that you know the situation, every time there is a wave you pay attention and the rest is just background noise as you practise ironing those shirt cuffs.
Whilst stopping to fill the 'h2o-to-steam' compartment in my trusty Tefal Turbo Pro 400 (it's an iron), a familiar noise dragged my attention to the WSL logo-ed screen. Someone had rumbled Laird Hamilton back out of the closet and he was being interviewed by an excited looking Strider Wasilewski. The subject, apart from some old Hawaiian camaraderie designed to remind us of Laid's importance, was a new film that Laird had brought out about dragon slaying.
No, sorry, that one has already been done. I am referring of course to the moment an interviewer asked Laird what is like for him when there are no big waves, he replied "It's like being a dragon slayer when there are no dragons". My personal favourite quote of all time because of course that makes it a lot easier to understand. Don't you just hate when you wake up and can't find a dragon to slay?
Anyway, this new movie is all about Laird's life, the best bits I guess, and while I bang on and attempt to give Laird a bad rap, I also appreciate his skill as a waterman and an entertainer. The new movie is called 'Ride Every Wave' and looks from the trailer above, to be a compilation of Laird over the years.
While being a bit of a cliche, Mr Hamilton is definitely an entertainer, and I will be tuning in to catch a glimpse of this, possibly the last film-reel from the mighty Dragon Slayer. Just as soon as I have finished this ironing.
