Watching a WSL contest is not always the most fun thing, at some point you are going to discover these things: a dumb bum, a sore back, missed surfs, cold, wet, getting up in the dark, trying to find a parking space, getting up in the dark, finding a toilet, forgetting to bring food and dead camera batteries.
Did I mention getting up in the dark? to stand on a cold, windy and slightly rainy beach? Because thats what I did this morning. And it was well worth it. In fact I would have happily enjoyed more suffering to witness one of the most decisive finals to an event ever.
My elation is for good reason as still etched in my memory is the performance of a future legend. John John Florence today won the 1st of many world titles. The young Hawaiian who has been bred and sculpted for this very occasion has not only won but demolished his opposition.
We took the liberty of recording the best four waves of the final for you.
Truly, I have seen very few other spectacles that will rival Johns performance this morining. He had already won the World Title when he entered the water to surf the final and it was as if a visible weight had been lifted. Almost as if a governor had been removed and we where subjected to the raw talent of a genius.
What this means for the future: Gabby 1, Florence -1 and we have ourselves an instant 'rivalry'. Scripted or not this is a breath of fresh air for the WSL and we will be tunning in to watch Pipeline with huge amounts of gleee
Massive congrats to John John.
