It has been about 2 weeks since the WSL announced that Shane Dorian had won the XXL nominations... AGAIN! I feel that enough time has passed that I can talk about this without getting all fiery around the collar. There are however a few points that I would like to address... calmly now, calmly... breathe, don't get upset.
Okay I am sufficiently relaxed. Lets look at this thing objectively. Shane Dorian charges, that is an undisputed fact and is very talented in any size waves. He can rip the bag out of a 2 foot shore break or take on the biggest waves on the planet. I am not arguing this point. I want to make this clear.
These were the final nominees;
What I would like to do is cast you back in my mind to a phone call I had with my brother before the nominee finalists were announced. We were excited about who might win and he said
“I reckon Brad Domke might get it, his wave was the sickest thing I have seen all year.”
I replied
“ No way mate, you know Shane Dorian is going to win like he does every year, he will probably even enter twice haha.”
Little did I know that's exactly what happened... he entered twice! Can you do that? Has anyone checked? Am I the only one that thinks this a bit much, after all we are talking about the biggest wave ridden this/last year and it seems a little bit excessive. I mean what happened to Taj and Mark Mathews at The Right? That was insane!
What I am trying to get at is that there were some phenomenal waves ridden last year by a whole bunch of guys and really very little to separate them. So why put Shane up twice? The other interesting issue here is why didn’t Brad Domke win? Is it because it was a skimboard with no fins? Surely that makes it even more impressive?
A lot of questions and no answers, now I could be way off the mark here, I am not a big wave surfer and not sure I deserve an opinion but I do have one and that was it.
Oh and congrats to Shane...Again. Yawwwwwnn.
