I really mean it, watch out world surf league because the French are coming. France is in Europe, just in case anyone was wondering and it is a country all of its own. I am telling you this because I recently met a person that seriously thought that France was the capital of India!
Anyway, back to the point. I have always had a soft spot for the French as far as a surfing nation goes. They are one of the only countries that I know that seem to have embraced the positive things from the surf culture. Maybe the lifestyle helps, the lazy afternoons on the beach and the very relaxed approach to work itself.
The French have been producing quality surfers for a while but it was almost as if they lacked the belief to perform on the big stage, like they where waiting for something. Well the waiting is over and the lads from the South West are about to show the world what they are made of. Not only do they live on one of the best training grounds on the planet but they have the skills to pay their bills on the World Tour and play with the 'big boys' of the surfing world.
Let me be more specific and give some examples of the talent soon to be showcased to the world. First up is local legend Joan Duru, who has missed qualification by 2 places 2 years in a row. The goofy footer from Ondres, not far from Hossegor is a true charger.
Next Up we have local ripper Vincent Duvignac, freshly signed with Rip Curl.
The almost also nearly in tour many times over Marc Lacomare
You get the general idea. I could go on with the list, I have not even mentioned Maxime Huscenot, Benjamin Sanchis or fresh junior talent like Tommy Boucant.
All of these guys I have mentioned are out surfing on huge days also, they are not afraid to get nailed or to prove themselves in waves of consequence. I like to put a 'full stop' or 'period' in the article and I think that French lady charger, Justine Dupont, does that nicely.
They are ready and they are coming.
