We were having in argument in the office last week about who's car was the best. (Yes, we are all over 7 years old!) It got me thinking, what is the best car for surfing? The answer to that is easy. A 1988 Bedford Midi SWB 2.2 normally aspirated diesel. My Car.

It turns out that not everyone agreed, so perhaps the only way to get a more reliable answer is to ask you guys. The public.

This experiment was not hard at all. All we did was type into Google 'best surf car' and chose the top 5 results which were somewhat surprising, and not just because my '88 Bedford was not among the results.

1.- First up was this beast.

The name of this car alone gives it the right to hold the number one spot on Google rankings, even if it does look like the sort of thing that Bill & Ted would drive around. 'Yaaa, like toootally tube quest duuuude'

    • Next, for no reason at all, was this?!??!
The Dutton amphibious vehicle.

We think this is a Suzuki Jimny with something that's not a surfboard on top. Proof that Google is not infallible.

    • this classic piece of surf nostalgia all the way from errr, Germany.

Yes, it is in fact OUR dream car, unfortunately in Europe one would set you back around ten to twelve grand, which is a lot to spend on a car that will only start when the sun is shinning. (4 days a year in the UK)

4.- More sensibly, and quite honestly I am surprised that this did not come in at number 1, is the VW Camper Syncro 4 wheel drive.

Without a doubt this would be the most sensible choice for most people. What this car means is that you can drive down a dirt track on a Friday night after finishing work, go to sleep and listen to the 4-5ft thumping hollowness all night only to wake up to the reality of 2ft on-shore slop.

5.- Lastly we have THE ROCK'S own personal get away vehicle.

The most useful and sensible option.

The most useful and sensible option.

Rumour has it that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson built this thing from scratch with his bare hands and occasionally, his teeth. Apparently the 'look-out' on the top is an optional extra for checking waves without stopping.

But the winner as voted in by our office team was this... for obvious reasons.

Yeeeeessss. the go anywhere, boat trip slash road trip vehicle. Moor it out the back at Chopes and enjoy a beer before you surf. Snap a few shots off with the old camera without having to leave the driving seat.

Unfortunately for the Dutton it turned out that it's fuel efficiency was not good enough for the win in today's eco minded times.

This brings us full circle and answers its own question. Well two questions, firstly that Google does not know everything, and secondly that the best surf car is the one that you own.

As long as it's an '88 Bedford Midi.

I look forward to your comments on why your surf car is better than the exquisite 'Magic Bob'.
