And now time for something a bit different. Following up on an article that I did with Buster surfboards about the Munich river wave I have been doing a bit of digging and it seems that there is a whole world out there that I was unaware of...
Standing wave comps! Yes, there are a whole load of people who specialise in this, there is a tour and comps and everything.
From 31st July until the 23rd of August this summer right by the airport in Munich, you have a chance to test out the biggest artificial standing wave in the world. There is loads of stuff going on including the European Standing wave championships on the 15th and 16th August, the locals at the natural Eisbach river wave will pit themselves against the best in Europe. There are going to be night surfing events, visits from some celebs and of course the chance for you to have a go yourself.
It is quite difficult to explain so for those have not ever heard of a standing wave, check this out:
Looks like fun right? Not quite the same as normal surfing but I would be interested to have a go and see what translates across as different or the same. One thing is for sure, you would not have to worry about drop ins.
While we are on the subject of artificial waves, check out this latest footage of Surf Snowdonia in Wales, they have ramped it up to half power, not bad at all. Well Alan Stokes and Jarrad Howse don't make it look too bad.
Surf Snowdonia is open for business right now and all year round so get up there and give it a go. Me, I am just going to stick to normal, boring, old school, sea waves :)
