Matthew Mattoon is the owner and founder of Matunas Surf Wax and Matt likes to surf. Matt is also incredibly passionate about the impact we have on our environment as surfers and 20 years ago came up with the idea of creating, quite simnply,  the worlds most truly organic surf wax.

We at The Bunker are truly invested in getting behind anyone that thinks along similar lines ecology wise as our good selves and can offer a product that is not only refined but actually performs. We use Matunas for these reasons and oh because we like people that surf.

We wanted to have a chat with the man himself to find out more and found Matt to be very accommodating. Here is how it went down.

SB: Hey Matthew, thanks for sparing us the time, how far are you from the ocean and how often do you get to surf?

Matthew: I usually get to surf about 4-5 times a week as I have to make time to get in the water as my day at Matunas starts around 7:30a.m. and ends around 6:30 p.m. I will try and get at least an hour session in. I am about 7-10 minutes by car from my favorite surf break.

SB: Matunas surf wax has been going a long time, what has made it so successful, what sets it apart from other organic waxes?

Matthew: I think the success has been from the hard work and persistence of doing this for almost 20 years. Getting rejected constantly by surf shops helped over the years as it takes time even today for the owners to understand that an organic surf wax does matter. I wanted to make a product that was organic, but it had to work and perform as well. Staying true to our mission of creating products that are good for the environment without compromising quality has been the cornerstone of our business.

SB: Matunas, for us is the nicest smelling wax on the market at the moment, where do the flavor ideas come from? Are all the ingredients locally sourced?

Matthew: The ingredients are all sourced from our farms. The scents are a mixture of jasmine, blueberries, and raspberries. The scent idea derived from walking around the farm at night as when the wind picked up, the jasmine bushes and berry bushes on the farm would create this mixture of an amazing scent.

SB: How available is Matunas Worldwide? What is the cost compared to regular wax?

Matthew: Matunas is available in about 32 countries currently, as the cost is the same as the regular waxes on the market.

SB: Does Matunas have any plans for the future?

Matthew: Matunas plans to keep to the core of our business, as this all started with a bar of surf wax. We want to make sure that the upcoming generations have the knowledge of why it is important to have an organic surf wax for our environment.

SB: What do you think about surfing in the Olympics and Kelly Wave pool technology?

Matthew: I like the idea of surfing in the Olympics as it is great exposure to a not only a sport but a chance for the world to see a great way of living life. The Kelly Wave pool technology is great because Kelly had a vision his entire life, and made it become a focused reality; and you have to admire that.

SB: And that is why we love people that surf. As a group of people we are actually quite an awesome bunch, we are lucky enough to be able to tap into the most amazing feeling known to man and the people that don't indulge , don't know.

Matt's focus and determination through the years deserves to be applauded in our eyes. Matunas Wax, smells great, really performs well and is made by surfers who are dedicated to the cause.

Cheers Matt keep on doing what you do.
