Luke Kordyl is a musician at heart and for all the right reasons, and he just happens to surf quite well too. The Bloom, of which Luke is the head honcho, has just released a new single and a video to match (featured below). I thought I would give him a call and have a natter about surfing, ex-girlfriends and maybe some music.
DISCLAIMER: So here's me saying to him, how about we do an article in Surf Bunker, after all you do surf and you are a mate, but it turns out that I hadn't even listened to the single. I've just finished listening and watching. And it is awesome. I feel I have to own up to pretending to him I had seen it (sorry Luke) but life is busy and … well you know anything I say now will sound like an excuse. I don’t like excuses.
Have a gander at this, the new tune from The Bloom. 'In the Sky'
Apology done, lets get on with it.
I first met Luke after a traumatic time in his life. He had just lost his mum whose deathbed wish was for him to give it a proper go with his music. Luke got a professional album recorded (a very good one) in Australia as soon as he could. It was a wake up call and a huge motivation for him.
Fast forward a couple of months and Luke's German girlfriend, for whom he had recently moved all the way round the world, had dumped him. In Germany. Miles from home. He then got himself stuck in a job fitting suits in a London clothes shop, hadn't surfed for ages, his music dream was on the rocks and all he had was that (very good) professionally recorded album on CD.
That was three years ago. Now he is living the good life, by that I mean that he is playing music for a living and surfing good waves more often than you. In short he has paid his dues and is reaping the rewards, including some part time acting gigs as seen in this Tom Misch video below directed by the very talented Tom Ewbank.
Luke's band, The Bloom, work alongside Rhythm, the surf clothing brand, which helps him keep up the wave catching lifestyle. He favours the spitting kegs of Hossegor for a standard 3 -4 surf trips a year, which is where part of the new video is filmed. Some of the models used in the video are the waitresses who brought Luke a beer at the world famous Le Surfing in Seignosse and were persuaded to moonlight for the flick. Woody (owner of Le Surfing) has been a great supporter and friend to Luke from the beginning.
At the time of writing Luke's favourite wave weapon is a trusty 5’6” Lost Puddle Jumper which I was treated to a viewing of over our video call, but just as I went to return the favour and show off my new Wavegliders twin fin, the video feed cut out! Is this the modern equivalent of pretending you are loosing reception with the sssshhhcccrrr noise? If so, I don't blame him, boards are a topic to avoid. Or maybe Karma for not watching The Bloom video before the call.
Either way, this latest installment of 'In the Sky' from The Bloom is only taking them in one direction. Up. Awesome job and a tip of the hat to all involved.
SPOILER : Expect more good stuff coming soon from The Bloom.
