Jordy Smith from Durban, South Africa was meant to be the biggest thing in surfing since Simon Anderson stumbled across the tri fin set up. His blast onto the scene was full of controversy, partying and it seems, learning lessons the hard way.

In 2007 Jordan Michael Smith won the WQS hands down and made the jump to the WCT, he was 19 years old and full of beans for want of a better expression. There were rumours of how he had stated that he was going to show all the 'old boys' on tour a thing or two and consequently did not make many friends in a hurry, he also did not get the results he bragged he would either.

After a few years of trying to fight the system, Jordy seemed to settle down and start putting together some good heats, started knocking on the door of a few finals until he won J-Bay in 2010 and again in 2011. It would seem that Jordy was starting to make good in his promise but it was not until 2013 that he won another competition in the form of Brazil and then last year he took out Trestles. It looks like he is heading in the right direction and while I am personally not a massive fan I do enjoy watching this new more mature Jordy put a heat together. Check out his ten point ride in J-Bay last year and you can not say this kid is not gifted:

Getting to the point, Jordy has had a shocker of a year this year, full of different injuries and he has just proved a point that Martin Potter was trying to make in a heated discussion with Strider Wasilewski : should pros that are competing so hard and going for world titles be free surfing so hard and risking injuries? Here is a little clip of Jordy and his new mind set :

I for one think Jordy has the skills, all he has ever needed was that 'world title hunger'  and to grow up a bit. Unfortunately its a bit late for 2015 but look out for a fully charged and on-fire run from this man for the 2016 world title.
