Just once in a while you hear of an idea that grabs you by the nuts as being worthy of your attention in this world, where time is the scarcest commodity of all.
It was on the old dinosaur of social media 'Facebook' that I felt the first tingle of interest. I was 'busy' scrolling down the news feed (in my life that is so time scarce) when I came across an old friend who had been travelling and surfing all over the world, posting enviable shots of perfect waves and I noticed he had a new 'Facebook Page'. Jackson Customs. I could have been excused in thinking it sounded like Ollie Jackson (the aforementioned friend) had started making surfboards. The reality, it turns out, is something far more exciting.
Ollie Jackson who comes from Broadstairs in Kent (United Kingdom) had been visiting the surfing mecca of Indonesia, when his dad Dave (also an avid surfer) joined him for a holiday and together they hatched an idea that turned out to be a 'nuts worthy' one. Jackson Customs makes customized Honda Zoomers for surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding and skateboarding. The Zoomers are an iconic scooter that favour looks, practicality and reliability. They are imported from Japan, checked over, resprayed and inspected then modified with your choice of custom rack and set up, all by hand by Ollie and Dave.
There are three basic setups at the moment. The Vagabond, The Delinquent and the Sleezy Rider. All are customisable even down to details of seat embroidery. After talking more to the Jacksons it seemed clear that they would go above and beyond to make the bike that is ordered an actual work of art. Dave comes from an engineering background and with Ollie as an extremely interested 'paduan', you can be sure the end result will be nothing short of spectacular.
Getting down to brass tacks (the basics) what would one cost and how long would you have to wait? Providing the bike was in the country already, Dave and Ollie say that most orders can be fulfilled in 4-6 weeks and at an overall cost to the customer are from £1850. Bikes can be delivered to anywhere in the world, for quotes on your destination get in contact with the guys directly.
The Jacksons have been busy showcasing their bespoke Zoomers to the snowboarding European trade show 'Spring Break' 2017 and 'ticket to ride' event. Next Ollie says that next the father & son enterprise is targeting the surf world too, and have been customising their Zoomers for surfboards. There is a very real possibility is that you might see some of the models at the Quiksilver Pro France or the Rip Curl Pro Portugal events later in 2017 so keep you eyes peeled.
While this is not a new idea, it is a very refreshing take on an old one. No one wants to look like a dag (Australian for dweeb), so why not add a bit of flare and help save some $$ and the o-zone? Dave assures me that the Zoomers will return 120 miles on a UK gallon of petrol (Gas), which is 51 kms/litre if you live outside the UK, not bad at all. It just makes sense from every angle, in fact I could be ordering the first Surf Bunker, dropped handle bar, chopper style 50cc customised Zoomer company vehicle right now.
FYI: Ollie phoned me after the article was published to ask if his dad Dave could have more credit as it the whole thing was more his idea. So here it is. Keep up to date with the latest from the guys on Facebook and Instagram.
