The green movement is on a roll and surf companies are frantically trying to go eco and produce more sustainable products. That being said, it’s hard to know the good from the bad, who’s legit and who’s full of it!
There are heaps of individuals, groups, companies and organisations battling over the creation of the true meaning of ‘sustainability’. Depending on how you use ‘sustainability’ it can have a whole bunch of contextual meanings.
Here’s fairly good description:
Sustainable products are those products that provide environmental, social and economic benefits while protecting public health and environment over their whole life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials until the final disposal.
Armed with this knowledge, I came across Greenfix, who make surfboard wax from 100% natural ingredients, amongst other cool products… one of them being their cheese wax that looks like a good French Camembert and even comes in a traditional looking wooden box, brilliantly Francais!!
I’m going to get straight to the point… these folks are legit, and I’m backing them all the way. I seriously like their style, their company values and their products, plus the wax works like a good surfboard wax should do!!
The Brand
The team hails from the Basque country, near the famous and iconic surf beaches of Biarritz. They were brought up on some of the best waves in the Basque area, from famous point breaks to cruisey beach breaks.
Their company and products are founded on a strong passion for our sport, the belief in sustainable practices and caring for Mother Nature. They’ve thought of everything and don’t mess about with theatrical over indulgence when it comes to show casing their goods on their website.
These products are made by surfers for surfers, there’s no doubt about it!
The Product
They have a range of products, all revolving around wax and cleaning products for your prized surfboards. Everything is sourced and made in France, ensuring consistently high quality results with the up most care for our beloved planet.
For more info on their goods, check out their website. You’ll notice they’re completely transparent on their beliefs and processes, without a bunch of fancy jargon!
How green is the wax?
Greenfix is made exclusively from natural origins… check out these tests from the early days and you’ll see their wax nailed it http://www.surfersvillage.com/content/green-wax-truly-green-survey-says-no-way
Testing
I got to test the goods in France, Morocco and Senegal. So I got to try the base coat, cold, cool and warm waxes. Waves varied from hip to over head waves.
Did It Work?
Put it this way, I’ll not be buying any other wax from now on, and I already have a supply packed in my bag ready for my trip to Oz in a few weeks. I’m looking forward to testing out the tropical wax.
I’ve tried a few of these so called eco waxes and was never convinced. They wouldn’t stick to the board properly and normally had a weird colour to them that just made a mess of your board. They would rub off really quick too.
This is not the case with Greenfix. It goes on properly and you get a clean looking job, plus it doesn’t rub off after one wave. Have a watch of the neat tutorial for the best way to apply the wax correctly and take a look at the cool chart for what wax to use in what temperature waters.
Conclusion
It works! Don’t mess about, go buy some, you won’t regret it.
It’s a smarter buying choice.
It goes on properly and looks good.
It smells delicious. You’ll be doing your bit for the environment.
It’s really reasonably priced.
I fired a few questions at them, check out their replies……
**SB: You guys have done an amazing job and your website really covers everything, it’s hard to find any questions!**How often should we be cleaning our boards and reapplying a new wax job with base coat?
Damien: time you need to change a colder wax for a warmer one. For example, during the transition from Cold to Cool or Cool to Warm, or Warm to Tropical.
It is really important, because the colder the wax formula is, the softer it is. An Ice Cold formula is so much softer than a Cool or a Warm formula. And you don't want to go in warm water with wax that's is too soft. It sticks too much, it’s too soft, it can rub off and stain your wetsuit, etc.
SB: Do we need to wax our board for every surf session?
Damien: don't really need it, but doing it every time you go for a surf gives you confidence that your wax is going to do the perfect job.
SB: What is the best way to scrapped off wax? Can we collect it and reuse it?
Damien: definitely need a source of heat to soften the wax. You can use the sun(summer), a hair dryer, a heat gun, you can even combine them but be careful and don't apply to much heat or you could damage your board
Scrape off with a wax comb, then rub it with a dry cloth in order to remove all residue from the deck.
Concerning the reuse of the wax, yes it is possible as long as you don't mix different ranges (Cold with Cool for example) in order to keep the same temperature properties.
SB: Do you have any new products in the design process that we might see in the near future?
Damien: We've been working for a while on a Green Surf Pad and an innovative Surf leash made in Europe, I hope I'll be able to introduce those to the market in 2018,
SB: Do you think the surf industry is starting to make noticeable sustainable choices or is it all just a ‘sales pitch’?
Damien: think (hope) everybody is concerned by the environment and more sustainable developments, but some processes need much more time to change in this way due to unadapted production lines, no alternatives, costs of production too high for the moment, etc.
SB: Could you recommend to our readers other ways to ‘go green’ in their surf buying choices?
Damien:! Notox (www.notox.fr) and Kuntiqi (www.kuntiqi.com) have been working for years on top quality and sustainable surfboards. For wetsuits, plenty of brands are now using naturalprene or yulex.
SB: What other surf companies do you believe are making a difference in the ‘green/eco/sustainable movement’?
Damien: Brands as Finisterre, Hoalen, Lastage, to name just a few, are making a difference, whether they are local or international brands. Sorry for the ones I didn't mention, there must be many of them.
SB: Is there anything you would like to add or say to our readers?
Damien: good wax job really makes the difference. It can have a huge effect on the way you surf and a big percentage of pro surfers will vouch for this. So, always apply your Base coat and your wax in a cool, dry place. The cooler is the place, the better will be the waxing job. Draw your pattern on a clean deck with your base coat, then rub it softly until small bumps appear all over the deck. Then choose the good wax of the range depending on the water temperature and rub it softly.
Go surfing, and enjoy that time you spend surfing with friends or alone.
I'd like to add that specific point about us. At GreenFix we have deep concern in sustainable development, we are trying hard to be as “green” as we can. We have also gone to great lengths to amend the workplace in order to accommodate both disabled employees and/or applicants for job roles. These adjustments are in order to avoid disabled people being at a disadvantage when applying for a job or indeed working within our company. We don’t do this to be cool, but because we know that we all are a tiny piece of a much bigger puzzle.
SB: A big thank you to the guys at Greenfix and we at Surf Bunker are excited to see these guys succeed in everything they put their minds too, which I believe they will with the way they do things…
