At McKevlin's we pride ourselves in being very different from other shops in many, many ways.
As for our products, the Surfboard is our Main Priority. We're not a glorified boutique using a few surfboards as props. We stock hundreds of new and used surfboards year 'round. Also, we do not sell, trade, or service Pop-Outs. All our boards are Made In The USA and are either hand-shaped or hand-finished.
We strive to find unique clothing and surfwear brands that aren't found in a local mall or even a neighboring surf shop. In fact, most of the apparel companies we carry only sell to one shop in the Charleston area - McKevlin's.
For other products as well, we like to support different, special, and more under-the-radar styles. Just a few examples are: our Hive women's swimwear imported from Australia, Art by Chris Kemp, Paradise Candles of Hawaii, WoodRoze wooden-frame sunglasses, WaveZone skimboards from Florida, Wooden Prints by Justin Morris, and Freewaters sandals and shoes who provide fresh water to underprivileged countries.
We also stress the importance of giving you a variety of services that you can't find in just any shop. With our Consignment Surfboard program, we will help you sell your surfboard in our shop. We offer rentals of surfboards, bodyboards, and even surf and skate dvds. Plus, we provide Free fin test rides. Ours is SC's longest established 24-hour Surf Report line (843-588-2261). And, McKevlin's can hook you up with the very best available Surf Instructors as well as Professional Surfboard Repairs.
McKevlin's Surf Shop is the longest established surf shop in South Carolina and one of the oldest on the entire east coast. We are honored to have been an integral part of the Charleston surfing community for a half-century. When surfing was first introduced to the Charleston area, we were at the front lines in the battle against politicians who attempted to discourage the activity. Today we sponsor SC's longest established amateur Surf Team which consists of riders ranging in age from 13 to 58. Every year we also sponsor the D.J. McKevlin Gromfest surfing competition, which has become the state's most popular surfing event for 18 and under competitors. Plus, we help support our local ESA district, the Folly Beach Wahine Championships, the Save the Light Foundation, the Surfers Healing initiative, and the Surfrider Foundation.
